DOCTOR

Dr. Anne K. G. Bazilwich Dr. Anne K. G. Bazilwich was only twenty-three years old when she received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.  With over thirteen years of experience, she currently practices in Vermont at the Grand Isle Veterinary Hospital, where she enjoys treating companion and exotic mammals.  Dr. Bazilwich is the respected Director of Health Affairs for the American Ferret Association (AFA) and she has chaired the last three AFA International Veterinary Symposiums.  She conceived, devised, developed, and produced the first ever ferret exclusive ultrasound laboratory and ferret exclusive surgical, technical, and imaging laboratory for veterinary professionals.  In addition, she is the owner and President of the Grand Isle Veterinary Hospital; a founding board member and President of the Green Mountain Animal Sanctuary and Paws and Laws, LLC; an originating member of the Vermont Animal Cruelty Task Force; and the Vermont liaison for Bioterrorism, Agroterrorism, and Zoonotic Disease Awareness and Prevention, directed by the Centers for Disease Control and Center for Food Security and Public Health.  Dr. Bazilwich handles most media-related public relations for the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association (VVMA); she has appeared on WCAX CBS, WPTZ NBC, WVNY ABC, Channel 15/16 Saint Albans, and Vermont Public Television PBS.  Her lectures, presentations, and veterinary “call-in” programs have aired on WOKO 98.9FM, WKOL Kool 105FM, WJOY AM 1230, and the Vermont Public Radio (division of National Public Radio) Switchboard Program.  Vermont Maturity Magazine, Seven Days Newspaper, The Milton Independent, the Shelburne News, and other local newspapers have published her written works; the VVMA website, www.vtvets.org, hosts some of her articles and she is a regular contributer to Ferret USA, Ferrets, and Critters USA.  Often joined by one of her pets, Dr. Bazilwich frequently lectures about ferrets and other topics at veterinary and community venues.  In April of 2009, she traveled to Japan to lecture about ferrets at a Japanese veterinary conference sponsored by the Japan Ferret Association.  Dr. Bazilwich holds membership with the American Ferret Association, Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, Greater Burlington Association of Veterinary Medicine, Vermont Veterinary Medical Association, New York Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Bazilwich has lived in Grand Isle, Vermont for over a decade.  She is owned by Ceres and Kirah (aka Donut), her adorable English Mastiffs; Hokie, her athletic Australian Cattle Dog Mix; and Parker, her cozy cat.  Her husband, John J. Balkunas, Jr., Esq., practices law in Grand Isle County and the State of Vermont.  Dr. Bazilwich enjoys reading, swimming, volleyball, and hiking with her dogs.  She also trains two of her dogs in competitive obedience and agility; one recently won first prize at the American Kennel Club (AKC) obedience trials in Essex Junction, Vermont.
